A recent survey of 700 Kiwis showed that quite a percentage of them know that their vision is worsening, but haven’t seeked treatment.
This may translate to some aspects of higher occupational risks, especially for those operating machinery or driving, or any other jobs where good eyesight is essential.
And for youngsters with eye problems that go unchecked, it might even lead to other physical, educational or social development issues.
Having said that, a thorough eye examination doesn’t cost too much, and should be done at least bi-annually.

A recent survey done in the UK showed that more than 75% of contact lens users have bad hygiene habits when it comes to using contact lenses.
Some of these include putting on contact lenses directly, even though they’ve dropped it on the floor, washing the lenses with tap water instead of saline, sleeping with contacts on, and even licking their contact lenses to clean it.
In the short term, the user might not experience any discomfort, but the long term effects could be more disastrous, leading to severe complications of the eye, and even loss of sight.
So be sure to keep to recommended guidelines, so that you can continue to enjoy the convenience of contact lenses over eyeglasses.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is doing what it can to educate consumers on how to properly clean and store their contact lens, so that the risk of contracting eye infections is reduced.
The FDA has even created a video at its website for people to watch.
Recently, the FDA held a workshop called “Microbiological Testing of Contact Lens Care Products together with other professional eye care groups to discuss how best to evaluate contact lens solutions.
With this, solution manufacturers may be able to receive guidelines on how they may improve their labelling information on their products.

Most people do not get an eye examination until it’s too late.
Many common eye problems like near sightedness and glaucoma could have been detected and corrective or preventive measures could have been taken before the condition gets worse.
It is recommended that we have our eyes checked by the eye doctor at least once every 2 years before we reach the age of 60, and one a year after that.
At the same time, consume foods high in Vitamin A, like carrots, milk products & eggs etc.

Glaucoma, the leading cause of blindness, is a dangerous eye disease that too often gets detected too late, plainly because there are no symptoms beforehand.
It affects the optic nerve at the back of the eye and destroys the nerves gradually.
While treatment cannot correct eye loss, early detection can slow or halt the disease’s progression.
One such way is to visit an eye doctor, who’d most likely use the $300,000 Spectralis OCT to detect if you are suffering from the condition.
First-degree relatives of glaucoma patients have an eight times greater risk of developing the disease, so should proactively get themselves tested.
